Collierville Tops TN Best Towns for Young Families

Wow!! Gotta love this! That should help when recruiting for Memphis!

The Best Towns in Tennessee for Young Families

tennessee state

by  on AUGUST 6, 2013

Quality schools, cheap cost of living and ample opportunity for employment all bring a young family to settle down in a town. NerdWallet wanted to identify the best in Tennessee, so we asked the following questions as we analyzed cities and towns across the state:

  1. Does the town have good public schools? We measured schools’ academic performance with ratings from GreatSchools. This non-profit compares a given school’s standardized test scores to the state average to obtain a rating on a 1 to 10 scale (10 representing the highest score). Higher ratings led to a higher overall score.
  2. Can you afford to live there? We looked at both average home values in each town and ongoing monthly home costs, including mortgage payments, real estate taxes, insurance costs, utilities, fuel and other bills. Lower costs led to a higher overall score.
  3. Is the town growing and prospering? We assessed a town’s economy by looking at average household income and income growth over the last decade. Higher income and greater growth led to a higher overall score.

Check out our cost of living calculator and mortgage rates calculator for more information.

The Best Places for Young Families

1. Collierville

Collierville has one eye on the past and another on the future. The town does its fair share to preserve its historic spaces. There is the town square and antebellum architecture at the heart of Collierville, spotted with one-of-a-kind boutiques, antique stores, specialty shops and an old-fashioned gas station. Collierville’s town gem is the Train Museum, where visitors can take a trip back in time in a beautifully restored train car. Collierville does its best to work toward a bright future, too, and it is doing a great job. Collierville High School is extraordinarily successful: 98% of its students go on to a four- or two-year college, and the majority of students score well above the state average in statewide Gateway exams.

NSA Whistleblower is an IT Contractor!

Ed Snowden Patriot or Traitor

The news is certainly spreading about the NSA whistleblower and his identity!   The leak is being described as “the biggest intelligence leak in the NSA’s history”!  The Guardian is the website I first read about his identity and they also conducted the first interview with Ed Snowden, so I have linked their article.  We are now learning that he is an IT guy that has been contracting with the NSA and the CIA.  I can’t even imagine what the Liability Insurance hit will be for this guy’s contract.  For those that are unaware of this insurance… most contracting companies have very expensive Errors and Omissions Insurance, (liability insurance per se).  It protects the contract company from things just like this.  Can you imagine?   His company, Booz Allen has confirmed that Ed Snowden is currently a contractor with them.

Now, what I find even more intriguing is the fact that this whistleblower is a 29 year old Systems guy that is making $200,000+ dollars, is living in Hawaii and is coming out to share with the world that he was the one that leaked all this information about NSA gathering this data on Americans.

One blogger I read earlier today stated… If his motivations prove to be sincere, this is a 21st century example of an American who has “pledged his life, fortune and sacred honor”, harkening back to the courage and commitment to freedom of our founding fathers.

Booz Allen’s statement is, naturally, not so complimentary.  ”News reports that this individual has claimed to have leaked classified information are shocking, and if accurate, this action represents a grave violation of the code of conduct and core values of our firm. We will work closely with our clients and authorities in their investigation of this matter”.

Not to make light of this, but an IT friend sent me a joke that I just have to share with you all!

So what do YOU think, is he a Patriot or a traitor?  Comment below… let’s talk about it!

Elvis and Paul McCartney

McCartney leaves a giftSo Paul McCartney was in Memphis for his Out There tour and he visited Graceland for the first time.  He tweeted pictures of him at Elvis’ grave site.

Associated Press reported on his visit.  As did  Per the Associated Press, McCartney left a personal guitar pick on Elvis’ grave “so he could play in heaven”.

I did find an interesting interview of the Beatles telling about when they met Elvis two weeks before I was born (in 1965)!

I guess this goes into the “some publicity is better than no publicity” category, right?

Time to update editedThere are lots of tips and techniques on writing technical resumes that I will share in the future, but this article is about when to freshen up your resume.  So many technology folks do not keep updated resumes.  But your resume should not be gathering dust – and it just makes it harder after it’s been neglected for a while.  The top reasons for beginning a job search is because you just lost a job, you want or need to leave a job, or a great opportunity has just opened up. The first two are stressful situations and neither are the ideal time to be updating your resume.  As for the great opportunity — if it’s hot you don’t want it to have time to cool down.  In none of these situations would you want to be on a desperate search for the latest version of your resume with a rushed and frantic attempt to get it updated.  I guarantee you will not produce your best work in these circumstances.

So, here are a few milestones to use as a guideline on when to update your resume.
